A total of 10 dams on the river once blocked shad migrations, 4 will have fishways installed:
- Fairmount Dam (mile 9) has a vertical slot fishway in place and was planned to be rebuilt by 2005. The upgrade is currenlty underway after initial delays due to a shortage of funds within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the project.
- Flat Rock Dam (mile 15) groundbreaking ceremonies were held for construction of a fishway in March 2004. Construction began in earnest soon afterwards. The original target date for completion was February 18, 2005, however, high flows hampered construction. Adjustments (flow, etc.) are typically needed to maximize effeciency of fish passage. Construction is now complete.
- Norristown Dam (mile 21) is currently under construction and is scheduled to have a fish ladder in place by 2008.
- Black Rock Dam (mile 37) is scheduled to have a fish ladder in place by 2008.
